NOTE: This applies to 64 bit Mac OSX kernel. If you are running a 32 bit Mac OSX kernel, then this should not be an issue because all the apps will have to run in 32 bit mode. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4287. |
If you're like me you've probably been watching that countdown clock on Propellerhead's web site, eagerly awaiting the release of Reason 6. One of the big new features of Reason 6 is that it's 64 bit. Well, unfortunately that will break compatibility with ReWire applications. Now I like to use Reason as a ReWire slave and Live as my main DAW / Sequencer, so that means:
- Start Live
- Then, start Reason
.. and poof! magic ReWire goodness!
When I tried this with Live 8 and my new copy of Reason 6... nope... Reason started in standalone mode. No ReWire available. Then I remembered: "Oh yeah, Reason 6 is 64 bit. It must be expecting a 64 bit ReWire master when it starts." A quick web search revealed someone having a similar problem.
The solution on Mac OSX is to start Reason 6 in 32bit mode:
- In Finder, locate the Reason application icon. Right click -> Get Info, or use Command-I.
- Check 'Open in 32-bit mode'.

- Close the Get Info dialog.
Then, start Live then Reason as usual. You should see the ReWire light in the Hardware Interface device.

For some reason I don't have the option of opening in 32bit mode - where you have "open in 32 bit mode in your get info pane, I have only "locked" and "shared folder".
What can i do to change this ?

These instructions are for 64 bit OSX running 64 bit Reason 6. Maybe the options aren't there when running 32 bit OSX, but that would make running 64 bit Reason 6 impossible. So... not sure why that would be.

Many thanks! Spared me a laborous trip to the Reason User Forum with wise-ass RTFM comments
